Our estate

A family story

We are Arthur and Hugo, two brothers, the sixth generation of Mayards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Jean Rojas, our brother-in-law. Today the family estate covers 21 hectares of vines across three appellations.

The estate has been handed down through the Mayard family for six generations, and Jean has joined us to bring it to life alongside us. Each of us brings our own sensibility, but we share the same wish: to make wines that reflect our terroir and our family.

Thirteen grape varieties make up the mosaic of our vineyards. This diversity lets us express the full richness of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Rhône Valley, and we work every day so that we, in turn, can pass on a living estate.

The Rhône is drawn in red; the Côtes-du-Rhône area spreads in a pale orange wash from Vienne to south of Avignon, and Mont Ventoux (1,910 m), topped by its tower, is drawn to the east. An inset shows, in deeper orange, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area on the left bank, between Orange and Avignon, and the Lirac area on the right bank, in the Gard. A star and a château tower mark our cellar in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Our story in dates

Our history in dates

  1. 18th century

    Our ancestors, farmers

    Our ancestors are already “cultivateurs” (farmers) in Châteauneuf, then known as Châteauneuf-Calcernier. They grow olive, almond and cherry trees there.

  2. 1889

    Gratien, “le Père Pape”

    After phylloxera, Gratien Mayard, known as “le Père Pape”, obtains a passport for Argentina. He chooses to stay and replants his vines one by one, on American rootstocks.

  3. 1923

    The first Clos du Calvaire

    His son Alphonse and Marie-Louise Deydier bottle the first Clos du Calvaire.

  4. 1936

    The appellation

    The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is born.

  5. 20th century

    Maurice, then his children

    Maurice, then his children Didier, our father, Françoise and Béatrice, keep the family estate alive.

  6. 2020

    Organic, and our first trees

    First vintage certified organic. We plant our first trees in the vines, as an agronomic tool.

  7. 2021

    Domaine Mayard

    Our paths part from those of Clos du Calvaire. Arthur and Hugo create Domaine Mayard; Jean, our brother-in-law, joins us the same year.

  8. 2022

    Our vaulted cellar

    We fully renovate our vaulted cellar, in the heart of the village.

  9. 2023

    21 hectares

    The estate grows to 21 hectares: we take on new Côtes-du-Rhône vines under tenant farming and acquire vines in the Lirac AOC.

Regenerative farming

Understanding our farming practices

Since we founded Domaine Mayard in 2021, we have adopted four practices that guide everything we do in the vineyard. We work for the long term, always with the same concern: healthy soils, vigorous vines and a terroir that expresses itself in all its purity.

Our goal

To lastingly improve the health and resilience of our vines and vineyard soils by significantly increasing their organic matter content, in order to:

  • produce wines of great quality;
  • produce biodiversity;
  • increase their capacity to store and release water;
  • strengthen the connection between the vine and its terroir;
  • allow our vineyard to thrive lastingly for generations to come.

Viti-forestry

Our vineyard in agroforestry

Agroforestry is part of our practices. In our vines, the alley between the rows is sown with an eight-species cover crop, the galets (rounded stones) stay at the foot of the vines, and the tree works there as an agronomic tool serving the vine.

The vine stays at the centre

For us, the tree is a tool serving the vine. We plant it at the end of the row or in a hedge, where it protects the vine without casting too much shade on it.

Cover crop, living soil

In the alley, the mix covers the soil: less erosion, more nitrogen, more flowers for beneficial insects, and more biomass to return to the earth.

A corridor for natural allies

At the far end of the plot, the strip of trees welcomes birds, bats and useful insects: so many allies against grape moths and leafhoppers.

A slightly less extreme climate

Here, the mistral and the heat show no mercy. Hedges and tree canopies break the wind, limit sunscald and soften heat peaks around the bunches.

Our cuvées

Our wines

We make five wines, from Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Lirac. All are harvested by hand at full ripeness, sorted, then made without additives. In each one, we look for the truest expression of our work and our terroirs.

Our five wines in a row, from left to right: Lirac rosé 2025 (pink wax), Vin de France blanc 2025 (yellow wax), Côtes-du-Rhône 2025 (blue wax), Lirac rouge 2024 (burgundy wax) and Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge 2023 (orange wax). Hand-painted labels, signed “Arthur, Hugo & Jean, Paysans Vignerons”.
